This web service allows you to search for the meaning of abbreviations for English-language legal publications from the British Isles, the Commonwealth and the United States, including those covering international law and comparative law. A large selection of important legal publications in a foreign language is also included. Publications from more than 295 jurisdictions are included in the index. The database mainly covers legal reports and legal journals, but also includes important legislative publications and manuals. The index is still under development. As a result of digital publication, transcripts of judgments (including those later published in a series of reports and those that have not been reported) are becoming increasingly available, either through subscription databases or in the common law world, the legal information institute`s network of websites. (This is thanks to the Movement for Free Access to Justice (FALM)) This guide also serves as a portal to these sources. Published series of legislative reports are usually only available through subscription databases (which require Oxford SSO for online access). BAILII (British and Irish Legal Information Institute) offers the most comprehensive set of UK and Irish primary legal documents available free of charge online. There are more than 50 case law databases covering both courts and major courts and are listed in the “BAILII databases” under the following headings: England and Wales, Scotland, Northern Ireland, Ireland, united Kingdom and Commonwealth, and Europe. Most databases contain mostly up-to-date documents (especially around 1997), but older decisions are constantly being added with new cases.
To view the current coverage of a specific database, click the link in the BAILII Databases list. Recently added decisions, current and old, are also accessible via the “Recent Decisions”, “Recent Additions” and “New Cases of Interest” links on the home page. Where decisions have been reported by the Incorporated Council of Law Reporting, a link to the ICLR website is provided. There are several options for simple and advanced searches and a complete index of case names from A to Z. 1999 Decisions of the Higher Court (Land Chamber) and its predecessor, the Land Court, in a searchable database. The case law reports contain only details of court decisions for cases that raise a point of legal importance. The `Judgments` section of the Courts and Tribunals website contains judgments of the Court of Appeal, the High Court and the first and higher courts, as well as judgments of the Crown Court, the Magistrates` Courts and judgments of the County Court and the Military Court at the end of 2011. The database can be accessed and filtered by court or tribunal.
The judgments from 2009 to 2011 are available on an archived website. Subscription service. Lawtel includes summaries of reported and unreported cases since 1980 and some previous cases with links to full-text transcripts online, where applicable. The full text of other cases can be requested from Lawtel. Cases will be published online within 24 hours of the verdict. A separate database – Lawtel Personal Injury – contains an update service as well as case law and articles and is also updated daily. The Quantum Reports database dates back to 1980. Serious cases of bodily injury are included, as well as a wide range of cases not reported by the District Court. This comprehensive website for restitution law resources was created by Professor Steve Hedley of University College Cork. It contains full-text judgments in restitution cases from England and Wales from 1990 to 2010, some as links to other websites and others as documents on the website.
There are also links to cases and laws from many other jurisdictions, links to journal articles and abstracts, links to blog posts, and a general introduction to the topic. Note: As of October 2011, the site had not been updated. This section of the Northern Ireland Justice website contains a searchable database of judgments, summaries of judgments, practical instructions and instructions of the Lord Chief Justice from 1984 onwards. Knowing in which country the case was heard is not always as easy/obvious as you might assume with English as a common language! Fortunately, jurisdiction is included on the search results screen in Cardiff`s index of legal abbreviations – so if you don`t know/aren`t sure, you can type in the abbreviation of your quote to see possible jurisdictions. Rightsnet is run by Lasa Charity UK Limited. It provides information, advice and news on social protection law in the UK, mainly through its news and case law subscription service. However, the Open Access “Resources” section contains links to important online sources for legislation, official guidelines, manuals, case law, forms and calculators. The content of the case law includes an “Archive for Commissioners` Decisions” with nearly 5,000 decisions in PDF format from the late 1940s, which are generally not available elsewhere on the Internet. These include decisions that were previously available on Commissioner Howell`s website, in the archives of the Board of Social Security Commissioners, and in the Action Group on Child Poverty. There is no single database containing all the UK legal material, but the 2 main databases are Westlaw Edge UK and LexisLibrary MEMBERS OR can access both with their Oxford Single Sign On details. The content of Westlaw UK`s cases includes the full text of The Law Reports and other series of reports from the Incorporated Law Council; Reports in English; respond to cases; and many of Sweet & Maxwell`s specialty series, including Criminal Appeal Reports. There are also transcripts of unreported cases with extensive coverage in 1980 and earlier transcripts. The service is updated daily. The Court of First Instance (Tax) was established on 1 April 2009 and replaces four separate former courts – the Commissioners General for Income Tax, the VAT and Duty Tribunal, the Special Commissioners for Income Tax and the Article 704/706 Tribunal. The database of decisions here on the website of the courts of justice contains the decisions of the Court of First Instance (Taxation) and also of the defunct courts of 2002 (available from April 2003), with some previous decisions selected. The JustisOne service provides access to an extensive database of comprehensive texts of UK case law from 1163 onwards, including judgments of the Court of Appeal, the High Court, the House of Lords/Supreme Court and the Privy Council, as well as information on citations with links to reports and judgments on other websites. Other Justis products available on JustisOne include Times Law Reports, International Law Reports, reports published by the Irish and Scottish Councils of Law Reports and reports from various Commonwealth jurisdictions. Reference works of selection of cases relating to media and communication law from 1978 on the website of the bars 5RB. Many have full-text judgments available, downloadable or via links. This website, created by retired lawyer David Swarbrick, provides an index of more than 200,000 cases covering all areas of law, mainly in England and Wales, Scotland, Northern Ireland and Europe. Links to the full text wherever they are available (mainly on BAILII). New content is added daily, not only newly decided cases, but also older cases that were previously available on David Swarbrick`s Lawindexpro subscription service (which closed in November 2015). Directories, precursors of modern legal relations, are the most important sources for the development of legal doctrine in english courts from the late 13th century to 1535. Many have been printed, but others remain only in manuscript form. The database on this website, compiled by Professor David J. Seipp of Boston University, provides a searchable index and paraphrase of printed yearbook reports.
The website also contains a list of old printed editions of the directories, a list of manuscripts with locations, and an annotated bibliography of more than 80 articles and books on the directories.
