TITLE:                                          Land Surveyor
SUPERVISOR:                             Director of Surveying
LOCATION:                                 Louisville, Kentucky
FSLA CLASSIFICATION:         Hourly

POSITION SUMMARY:  Proficient with various aspects of Surveying providing boundary surveys, Alta surveys, topographic surveys, major/minor plats, legal descriptions, etc. to support project requirements.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS: 
A.   Perform Surveying Functions
       1.  Assume responsible charge of project tasks
       2.  Perform duties in accordance with minimum standards
       3.  Maintain professional conduct and ethics

B.   Understand Project Scope
       1.  Maintain a copy of the project contracts
       2.  Define project tasks and potential tasks
       3.  Determine critical deadlines for task completion
       4.  Gather critical project information from other departments
       5.  Be familiar with the site; make visits as necessary
       6.  Be cognizant and inform crew of safety issues

C.   Supervise Project Team
       1.  Define roles and tasks of team members
       2.  Guide team as needed toward task completion
       3.  Determine critical deadlines for task completion
       4.  Gather critical project information from other departments
       5.  Assess team member ability and utilize appropriately
       6.  Educate team members of project demands
       7.  Evaluate team member performance and report to Director

D.   Research and Gather Information
       1.  Gather information relative to project
       2.  Gather information relative to assigned task
       3.  Communicate with other office staff
       4.  Determine if additional information is needed
       5.  Make steps to gather missing information

E.   Develop Procedures and Standards
       1.  Be familiar with all equipment, software and logistics
       2.  Participate in development of department procedures for all aspects
       3.  Be familiar with assigned project staff
       4.  Adjust procedures as needed for the better
       5.  Assess staff application of procedures

F.   Assure Quality
       1.  Employ techniques to verify work quality
       2.  Make checks as needed to confirm accuracy
       3.  Note inconsistent systems or human errors
       4.  Assess means to correct consistent errors
       5.  Take all measures to ensure quality

G.   Communication
       1.  Inquire with other department staff on project criteria
       2.  Must communicate with office staff on status
       3.  Inquire about necessary tasks to be performed
       4.  Notify project staff of completed tasks
       5.  Communicate procedures to staff
       6.  Communicate with department staff
       7.  Communicate with clients

H.   Understand Computers and Logistics
       1.  Be familiar with software applications
       2.  Understand network usage and directories
       3.  Apply data filing system procedures
       4.  Participate in defining logistics of file transfers

I.   Understand and Apply Calc Standards
       1.  Be familiar with standards handbook
       2.  Apply correct standards to calc sheets and drawings
       3.  Verify variance from standards as necessary
       4.  Suggest improved standards
       5.  Maintain an accurate, concise and complete log

J.   Understand Field Techniques
       1.  Be familiar with proper usage of equipment
       2.  Understand field procedures and standards
       3.  Understand manufacturer specifications for equipment

K.   Facilitate Field Crew Operations
       1.  Define scope of field work and processes
       2.  Prepare information for field crews
       3.  Provide complete, accurate, legible information
       4.  Respond to field crew inquiries for information
       5.  Assist crews in data file transfers
       6.  Adjust project control information as indicated by crew

L.   Perform Calculations
       1.  Determine timeframe for task completion
       2.  Gather necessary info to perform calculations
       3.  Verify plans are current and correct
       4.  Understand scope of requested work
       5.  Notify appropriate staff of problems with plans

M.  Be Professional
       1.  Present a professional appearance
       2.  Behave in a professional manner
       3.  Address clients/public courteously
       4.  Respect the property of others

N.   Continue to Improve
       1.  Seek to better individual performance
       2.  Seek to better field crew performance
       3.  Seek to better department performance
       4.  Seek more efficient ways to perform daily operations
       5.  Seek better ways to communicate
       6.  Seek better ways to satisfy the client

ABILITIES AND QUALIFICATIONS:
   

  • PLS required
  • Software:  AutoCAD required
                       SurvCAD/Land Design required
                       Microsoft Office
  • Must have good interpersonal skills
  • Strong organizational skills and ability to handle details proficiently
  • Must be able to communicate with internal & external clients
  • Ability to read & understand construction plans
  • Interpret deeds and write legal descriptions
  • Ability to multitask, delegate & work with time sensitive deadlines
  • Ability to communicate across all levels of the organization
  • Coordinate work with all agencies

EXPERIENCE:

  • Prior experience working on a field survey crew as well as working in an office environment of a Survey Department
  • Experience with boundary surveys, Alta surveys, topographic surveys, major/minor plats, legal descriptions, etc. to support project requirements.

PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS:

  • Regular Attendance Required
  • Ability to work overtime
  • Ability to work independently and/or in a team environment
  • Ability to lift up to 40 lbs using proper lifting techniques
  • Approximately 5% travel
  • Must be able to walk, see, hear and speak
  • Frequent climbing, stooping, bending, lifting and reaching

WORKING CONDITIONS:

Much of work is performed outdoors

  • May be exposed to dust, dirt, irritants, hazardous chemicals, weeds, and other allergens 
  • Equipment may be loud and noisy
  • Work can be stressful and subject to immediate response to needs.
  • Must be willing to work in a drug free workplace
  • Must maintain all information received as confidential
