Reed Requirements

A compendium of academic guidelines outlining enrollment procedures, grades and assessment, course load, and other practices and requirements underpins Reed`s academic program. The guidelines can be found in the Faculty Code, a copy of which is available online for students. All students have access to Reed`s Guide, which presents them comprehensively in a format that is easily accessible to reed.edu/academic/gbook. The following is a brief summary of the main policies. The learning outcomes of the distribution requirements are listed below. The college will review your academic profile to ensure you are qualified. For applicants who do not meet the academic requirements, the chances of admission decrease significantly, regardless of their strength elsewhere. Students are encouraged to consult a reference librarian for more information on library resources and services. The library`s website can be found at library.reed.edu.

In addition to declaring the major, students declaring a double major or an ad hoc interdisciplinary major must also submit a justification for that major. The relevant departments will review the statement to assess the rationale for the proposed program. It is expected that the relevant ministries, departments and committees will review the files of all newly registered juniors and indicate whether the proposed program of study is satisfactory or whether certain course changes are required. Specific course and credit distribution requirements for majors are detailed in departmental and interdisciplinary program descriptions. During the junior or senior years, students have the opportunity to complete a maximum of two units of work on a credited/non-credit basis as part of their regular academic load. Such a course cannot be used to meet college distribution requirements, major requirements, or department requirements, and cannot be taken in the student`s main department. If the work for the course is classified as level C or higher, the grade is reported as Cr (credit); if the work is at level C− or lower, it must be declared NCr (No Credit). Under no circumstances will the mark or unit value be used in the calculation of the score point. A registered student who chooses to audit a course may do so with the instructor`s permission, but no record of the supervised course will be kept in the student`s permanent file.

To earn the Bachelor of Arts degree from Reed College, students must meet eight basic requirements: The following rules apply to all current distribution requirements: Credit Transfer and Cross-Registration Enrolled students may transfer credits from regionally accredited colleges and universities with certain restrictions. One of these limitations is that, as a general rule, students are not allowed to transfer loans beyond the credits allowed for the equivalent reed course. Students must obtain course approval before enrolling in another school, and it is the student`s responsibility to ensure that an official transcript of the work is sent directly to Reed`s registrar. Transfer credits can be used to meet certain degree requirements if faculty approval is obtained in advance. Courses must be taken for an alphabetical or numerical grade, and students must obtain a grade of C− or better. Students can obtain a credit transfer approval form and additional information from the Registrar`s Office. Admitted first-year students can request to defer entry for one year once they have completed their $400 non-refundable security deposit. Students wishing to submit a deferred application must email a detailed written schedule for the deferral year to admission@reed.edu no later than June 15 to the Vice-President and Dean of Admissions and Financial Aid. Deferral requests will not be considered without filing. The Reed Education program emphasizes a balance between broad study in the various fields of human knowledge and narrow and in-depth study in a recognized academic discipline.

All students take a one-year course in the humanities. Distribution requirements that include arts and humanities, social sciences, mathematics, foreign languages, and natural sciences expose students to many different methods of intellectual inquiry. Typically, students focus on a specific area at the end of their second year. When declaring a major, students work with their academic advisor to plan a program that meets the needs of departments, departments, and colleges. They take an aptitude test in their major subject at the end of their junior year. Seniors engage in a one-year research project and prepare and defend a thesis based on that research. For more information about computing at Reed, visit the Information Technology website at reed.edu/it. The following is a description of these requirements. Specific main requirements can be found in department lists, and department requirements can be found in department lists. The joint application is a consortium of more than 600 colleges and universities. Each year, more than 3.5 million joint applications are submitted. If you are applying through the joint application, students must submit the joint application, a personal essay, and a reed writing supplement, which can also be emailed to admission@reed.edu.

A local education authority (LEA) must reassess a student who is receiving special education services if it determines that the student`s educational or related services, including improved academic and functional performance, warrant reassessment, or if the student`s parents or teachers so desire. The IDEA sets deadlines and requirements for when a re-evaluation takes place. The DRP Committee and, if applicable, other qualified staff must complete an ESSP to determine what additional data, if any, is required to determine whether the student is still a student with a disability and requires special education and related services, and whether changes to the services offered are required. Students who wish to request an exemption or waiver of an academic policy should petition the Board of Trustees or their department.
