Legalized Name
When clients come to my office, I ask them to fill out an intake form. The first question on this form is about its legal name. Although this may seem like a simple question, many customers don`t know how to answer this question. Many clients provide their first name, middle name and last name as it appears on their driver`s license and/or marriage certificate; others use a given name, middle initial, and last name; Some women give their maiden name and still others fill out the form with a nickname. What is your official name? Is it the name you were born with or the name you use every day? A legal name is the official name by which a person is recognized in the eyes of the law. In the United States and other Western countries, a legal name consists of a first name, an optional middle name, the legal surname or last name, and, for men, any suffix such as Jr. or III. The use of a legal name is often necessary for a number of reasons, ranging from security records and background checks to ensuring the correct identity of the person in question. Given name(s) = full first name and middle name, each of which may consist of more than one part; and Since a person`s middle name or suffix is not considered part of the legal name by SSA, a middle name displayed in the first name or a suffix displayed in the last name may be omitted or entered in the middle name and suffix fields of the census system. If the applicant has a multi-part first name and does not claim to have a middle name, the multiple parts must be entered as a first name. There is also no law that requires a person to have a first name. Although all births must be registered, the law does not require a first name. But in practice, a person will always have a name, due to the fact that with our language and culture, everyone is “called” some name.
Therefore, even if the person has adopted it as “legitimate”, this name will meet the definition of its “legal name”. NOTE: For international students (F-1 and M-1), consider the name on Form I-20 as the legal name. For exchange visitors (D-1), consider the name on the DS-2019 as the official name. The only time you can process an application for a Social Security Number under a name that does not match the name on the immigration document is if the person has legally changed their name after the immigration document was issued. In these situations, the official name is the name given on the proof of name change. For more information on proof of a name change, see RM 10212.010. In Germany, names are widely regulated. In addition to the possible adoption of the partner`s surname at the time of marriage, German citizens may only change their name for an important and recognized reason. Among other things, a name change is permitted if the name may result in confusion, ridicule, unusual spelling difficulties, or stigma.
In some situations, children`s surnames may also be replaced by the surnames of their natural, foster or adoptive parents. Transgender people can change their first name. Foreign names in writing systems that are not based on Latin are transliterated according to rules that may conflict with the system of transcription or transliteration of names used in the country of origin. Previous titles of nobility were incorporated into surnames in 1919, but continue to be adapted to gender and other circumstances. [6] Of course, some names would be illegal as an indirect consequence of more general laws. For example, any name containing racist language would be illegal under section 18 of the Public Order Act 1986. When in doubt, or when many names are (or have been) used, names that have been used for formal, solemn and official purposes – over a longer period of time – carry more weight than names used for temporary, social or everyday purposes. A person`s official name is usually the same as their personal name, consisting of a first and last name.
The order varies depending on the culture and country. There are also country-specific differences regarding legal name changes by marriage. (See married name.) Sometimes it is not clear what a person`s official name is because they are known by more than one name on different documents. They can also only be used informally or socially, in which case they are not part of your legal name. If one person tries to use different punctuation marks, other people and organizations will usually ignore them. In practice, the name by which a person wants to be called and known is limited by the willingness or ability of other people to call them after that.
A first or last name can be of any length – from one letter.
